Eminent Reclaim:
710 Freeway Destroys Neighborhoods -- Over Six to 10 Years of Construction

Return to the Eminent Reclaim Index

Freeway construction will lay seige to our neighborhoods for six to 10 years. Thousands of people will be displaced, nearly 1,000 homes will be destroyed, five historic districts will be disrupted, and 7,000 mature trees will be uprooted.

A canyon -- one-quarter mile wide and almost five miles long -- will be carved to make room for the eight-lane freeway.

Expect one double trailer truck driving to the gravel pits in Irwindale via the Foothill Freeway every two minutes, eight hours a day, five days a week, for at least four years to dig and haul 4.2 million cubic yards of dirt, according to civil engineer Tom Nuckols. And now that the freeway will be below grade through El Sereno, even more dirt will be trucked through Pasadena streets.
