![]() Eminent Reclaim: Some people say that we've debated this freeway long enough. The truth is that Pasadena residents have never been allowed into the debate. In 1964, state transporation officials privately met with the Pasadena Board of Directors, Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, city engineering staff, the planning commission, Union Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads, Huntington Memorial Hospital, Ambassador College, Pasadena Redevelopment Agency, and the Pasaden School board to choose a route in Pasadena. No citizen representatives were included in this decision process, as this was before state and federal laws required that the public be informed about the impacts of public works projects through an environmental impact report. This decision has stood for 34 years without considering the concerns and needs of Pasadena residents. Over the years, our city leadership has done nothing but block any public involvement and demonstrate a lack of knowledge on the issue. The latest discussion about the 710 Freeway by the Pasadena City Council, on October 6, 1997, was a last-minute agenda item added over the weekend and was held in the wee hours after the audience was gone. Council members joked about the issue while they were informed of a deadline to respond to the federal government's proposed conditional approval. It is time for the public, responsible and disciplined approach to our transporation plans. Join the efforts of Eminent Reclaim, involved citizens and other organizations to call for a better transportation future. |
